The game’s soundtrack even topped Spotify’s viral charts, and it received high praise from notable figures, including French President Emmanuel Macron.

Broche began by reaching out to potential collaborators through Reddit and other online forums, looking for people who shared his vision. This unconventional approach led him to assemble a talented team, including Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, who joined as a voice actor and later became the lead writer.

Set in a fictional world called Lumiere, the game follows a group on a quest to confront a mysterious entity known as The Paintress. Each year, this entity lowers a glowing number on a monolith, causing people of that age to vanish. The game’s aesthetic is influenced by 19th-century France and features classic turn-based battles, setting it apart from many modern games.

Broche left Ubisoft to form his own studio, Sandfall Interactive, in Montpellier, France. With funding from Kepler Interactive, the team grew to about 30 members, many of whom were recruited through similar outreach efforts. The team members wore multiple hats, contributing in various ways beyond their primary roles, which added to the game’s unique charm.

The game’s production quality rivals that of larger studios, thanks in part to advancements in game development tools and the backing of Kepler. The team managed to attract talented actors, including Charlie Cox and Andy Serkis, to lend their voices to the project.

As Clair Obscur continues to receive acclaim, Broche reflects on the journey. He attributes much of the success to the creativity sparked by the pandemic and a bit of luck. What started as a personal project has turned into a celebrated game that resonates with players around the world, proving that passion can lead to remarkable achievements.
