Amnesty International has accused Israel of committing acts of genocide in Gaza, describing the situation as a “live-streamed genocide.” In its latest report, the organization claims that Israeli forces are intentionally causing severe harm to civilians and creating living conditions aimed at their destruction. This report comes in the wake of escalating violence following the attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which left over 1,200 people dead in Israel.
Since that date, Palestinian health authorities report that more than 51,300 people have died in Gaza, including at least 17,400 children. Amnesty’s Secretary-General, Agnes Callamard, emphasized that the world has witnessed the destruction of families, homes, and vital infrastructure as Israel conducts military operations in response to Hamas.
The report highlights that Israel has repeatedly blocked humanitarian access to Gaza, even as it launched attacks on areas where civilians were trying to evacuate. Amnesty International also pointed out the arbitrary detention and forced disappearances of Palestinians by Israeli forces.
Callamard criticized not only Israel but also its allies, particularly the United States, for failing to hold Israel accountable for its actions. She stated that international law seems to be disregarded by powerful nations in this conflict.
Israel, for its part, denies these allegations, asserting that its military actions are necessary for self-defense against Hamas. The ongoing violence has raised serious concerns about human rights and the protection of civilians in the region. The international community continues to grapple with how to respond to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
