Huawei Technologies, the Chinese tech giant, is gearing up to test its latest artificial intelligence (AI) processor, the Ascend 910D. This new chip aims to rival high-end products from Nvidia, the leading US chip manufacturer. According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Huawei has reached out to several Chinese tech companies to assess the chip’s technical capabilities.
The Ascend 910D is expected to be more powerful than Nvidia’s H100 chip. Huawei plans to receive the first batch of samples for testing as soon as late May. This new chip follows previous versions known as the 910B and 910C. Sources indicate that the Ascend 910D is still in the early stages of development and will undergo extensive testing to ensure it meets performance standards before it reaches customers.
In addition to the 910D, Huawei is also preparing to start mass shipments of its 910C AI chip to Chinese clients in the near future. The company has faced challenges over the years in developing top-tier chips that can compete with Nvidia’s offerings, especially for training AI models. This training process is crucial for teaching algorithms to make accurate decisions based on data.
The US government has restricted China’s access to Nvidia’s most advanced AI chips, including the flagship B200, in an effort to curb China’s technological growth, particularly in military applications. The US also banned the sale of the H100 chip before it was even launched.
Despite these restrictions, Huawei has made significant strides in developing competitive alternatives to Nvidia’s chips. This aligns with China’s broader strategy to build a self-sufficient semiconductor industry. Huawei has shown resilience against US trade sanctions, which have been in place for nearly six years. The company recently launched the high-end Mate 60 smartphone, featuring a domestically produced processor, which surprised US officials during a visit by former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to Beijing.
While Nvidia declined to comment on the situation, Huawei has not yet responded to requests for further information. As Huawei continues to push forward with its AI chip development, the tech landscape may see significant shifts in the coming months, particularly as it seeks to challenge Nvidia’s dominance.
