In Fort Worth, Texas, the number of converts surged from 896 in 2023 to 1,544 in 2024, marking a remarkable 72% increase. Father Will Straten, a pastor at St. Mary’s Catholic Center at Texas A&M, noted that many students are searching for authenticity and meaning in their lives. He remarked that young adults are looking for something real and grounded, especially after the uncertainties brought on by the pandemic.
The trend is not limited to Texas. Across the country, priests report that a large portion of new converts are in their 20s and 30s. Father Raymond Maria La Grange from St. Vincent Ferrer in Manhattan shared that many of his new parishioners come from diverse backgrounds, including Protestants, non-religious individuals, and those who had previously practiced Catholicism but drifted away.
Sydney Johnston, a young woman from Manhattan, reflected on her journey of faith that began during her college years. After stepping away from her nondenominational Christian roots, she felt compelled to explore various denominations during the pandemic. Ultimately, she found herself drawn to the Catholic Mass, appreciating its rituals and sense of history.
Another young adult, Taylor New from Cincinnati, described how a YouTube video about Catholicism changed her perspective. She began researching and ultimately decided to leave her previous evangelical faith behind. New emphasized that many young people are turning to the Catholic Church because they are on a quest for truth and authenticity.
Adrian Lawson, a 30-year-old software developer from Southern California, shared a similar story. Raised in a nondenominational household and later becoming an atheist, Lawson found his way to Catholicism after watching a debate between a Catholic and a Protestant YouTuber. Despite facing backlash from his family, he embraced the faith and found solace in prayer.
This wave of conversions reflects a broader search for meaning among young adults in a rapidly changing world. As they seek out communities that offer structure and moral guidance, many are finding that the Catholic Church provides a sense of belonging and purpose.
