Four Killed in Cable Car Accident Near Naples

Four people tragically lost their lives in a cable car accident near Naples, Italy. The incident occurred at Mount Faito, where the cable car cabin fell to the ground, leaving another person with serious injuries. Emergency services quickly responded, and that individual was airlifted to a hospital for urgent care.

Reports suggest that one of the supporting cables for the cabin had snapped while the cable car was crossing the valley. The president of the Campania region, Vincenzo De Luca, confirmed that the victims were tourists enjoying the scenic views when the accident happened.

Rescue efforts faced significant challenges due to poor weather conditions. Fog, wind, and rain made it hard for rescuers to reach the crash site, which is located at an altitude of 1,500 meters. Earlier in the day, there were reports of other cable cars becoming stuck, with passengers being rescued from those cabins.

The mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, where the cable car is based, mentioned that they suspect a traction cable failure led to the crash. He noted that while the emergency brake downstream functioned properly, the cabin’s brake did not activate as it approached the top of the hill. Regular safety checks are conducted on the cable car system, according to the mayor.

As this story develops, more information will be shared. The community is in mourning as they come to terms with this tragic event.
