Pope Francis made a heartfelt appearance in St. Peter’s Square on Palm Sunday, bringing joy to over 20,000 faithful who gathered to celebrate the occasion. This event marked a significant moment in his recovery from a serious battle with double pneumonia. The 88-year-old pontiff greeted the crowd from his wheelchair, visibly without any nasal tubes, a sign of his improving health.
During his address, he wished everyone a “happy Palm Sunday” and expressed gratitude for the prayers and support he received during his illness. He mentioned that these gestures helped him feel God’s presence and compassion, especially during this time of physical weakness. He encouraged the crowd to remember those who suffer, urging them to carry the cross for others as they enter Holy Week.
The Vatican has yet to confirm what role Pope Francis will play in the upcoming Holy Week events leading to Easter on April 20. His doctors have advised him to avoid large gatherings, but he chose to interact with the crowd on this special day, thanking them for their prayers and support.
Many attendees reached out to touch him as he was wheeled to the main altar, eager to connect with their leader. This appearance was his second public outing since returning from Gemelli University Hospital in Rome, where he was hospitalized for five weeks. Just a week prior, his unexpected return to public life had been met with great enthusiasm from the faithful.
In addition to his Palm Sunday message, Pope Francis took a moment to pray for those suffering from conflicts around the world, including in Sudan, Ukraine, and Lebanon, among others. His thoughts were particularly with those affected as Sudan marks the second anniversary of its ongoing conflict.
Following his discharge from the hospital on March 23, doctors recommended that he rest for two months at the Vatican. Despite this advice, his willingness to engage with the public shows his commitment to his role as a spiritual leader. Recently, he also met with King Charles III and Queen Camilla during his convalescence, further emphasizing his ongoing engagement with global leaders.
