Ukraine’s European allies have committed to providing €21 billion, or about $24 billion, in military aid to support Kyiv during what they call a crucial year in the ongoing conflict. This announcement came during a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group at NATO’s headquarters in Brussels, where defense ministers from various countries gathered to discuss military support.
Germany is set to contribute more than half of this aid, amounting to €11 billion over the next four years. British Defence Minister John Healey emphasized that these pledges send a strong message to Russia, highlighting the unity and determination of Ukraine’s allies.
The new support package includes crucial items such as air defense systems, missiles, and other military equipment. Healey pointed out that air defense is a top priority, especially given the scale of recent attacks on Ukraine. He noted that Russian forces have launched thousands of glide bombs and attack drones, causing significant casualties on the battlefield.
Germany’s contribution is particularly focused on artillery. The German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced plans to send 100,000 rounds of artillery ammunition, 25 infantry fighting vehicles, 15 battle tanks, and various radar systems to Ukraine. Additionally, Germany will provide four IRIS-T air defense systems equipped with 300 missiles.
The meeting in Brussels also saw participation from U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who joined remotely. He expressed appreciation for the efforts of European allies in supporting Ukraine. Pistorius clarified that Hegseth’s remote participation was due to scheduling rather than any reduction in U.S. commitment to Ukraine.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, present at the meeting, expressed gratitude to European nations for stepping up their security assistance. He highlighted the importance of this support, especially as discussions continue regarding a potential ceasefire. Both Healey and Pistorius criticized Russia for its lack of interest in peace talks.
As the situation evolves, the stakes remain high. The continued military support from Ukraine’s allies reflects a shared commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s defense capabilities as the conflict shows no signs of abating.
