Putting Differences Aside, Bass and Caruso Collaborate on Palisades Reconstruction

Mayor Karen Bass and developer Rick Caruso, once political rivals, came together on a sunny Thursday in the Pacific Palisades to announce a plan to rebuild a city-owned recreation center that was damaged in a fire on January 7. This collaboration comes after a tumultuous period marked by Caruso’s sharp criticism of Bass’s leadership during the fire and ongoing political tensions.

The recreation center, located on Alma Real Drive, was a beloved community hub, featuring tennis courts, basketball courts, and a playground. The estimated cost for the redesign is around $30 million, with funding partially coming from Caruso’s philanthropic group, Steadfast LA.

At the event, both Bass and Caruso addressed their relationship. Caruso noted this was likely their first public appearance together since their competitive race for mayor in 2022, where Bass emerged victorious. Bass chose to focus on the positive, emphasizing the importance of community healing and restoration. “It is appropriate for us to come together in a public-private partnership — that’s the best way to get things done,” she stated, highlighting the need for collaboration in addressing community needs.

JJ Redick, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers and a Palisades resident, also participated in the announcement. He expressed his commitment to the community, stating that the rebuilt center would serve as a cornerstone for local residents.

Despite the camaraderie displayed at the event, the backdrop of their past disputes loomed large. Caruso had previously criticized Bass for her absence during the fire, as she was on a diplomatic trip in Ghana. He has also called for an independent investigation into the fire’s management, pointing to issues like inadequate water supply from fire hydrants.

The public’s reaction to the joint appearance was mixed, especially given Caruso’s earlier comments about Bass’s leadership. He acknowledged that while he believes she is trying, there is a desire among residents for more decisive action from her administration. Bass countered that the city is on track for one of the fastest recoveries from a fire in California’s history.

The event attracted local residents, including Jessica Rogers, president of the Pacific Palisades Residents Association. She praised Caruso for his collaboration with Bass, urging him to continue working with the city for the community’s benefit.

As Bass and Caruso move forward with this project, the focus will remain on rebuilding the center and restoring community trust, even as the political landscape continues to evolve.
