Putting Differences Aside, Bass and Caruso Collaborate on Palisades Reconstruction

Mayor Karen Bass and billionaire developer Rick Caruso, once political rivals, have joined forces to announce a plan to rebuild a recreation center in the Pacific Palisades, which was damaged in a fire earlier this year. The announcement came during a sunny event where both leaders emphasized the importance of community recovery and collaboration.

The recreation center, located on Alma Real Drive, was a beloved spot for local residents, featuring tennis courts, basketball facilities, and a playground. The fire that struck on January 7 caused significant damage, prompting immediate calls for action to restore the facility. The estimated cost for the redesign and rebuilding efforts is around $30 million, with funding coming from private donations, including contributions from Caruso’s philanthropic organization, Steadfast LA.

During the event, both Bass and Caruso reflected on their past conflicts. Caruso, who spent over $100 million on his mayoral campaign against Bass in 2022, had previously criticized her leadership during the fire crisis. However, he expressed a desire to see more progress in the city and acknowledged Bass’s efforts in recovery. Bass, on her part, focused on the positive aspects of their collaboration, stating, “It is appropriate for us to come together in a public-private partnership — that’s the best way to get things done.”

JJ Redick, a Lakers coach and Palisades resident, also attended the event. He highlighted the center’s significance, calling it “the cornerstone of this community.” His organization, L.A. Strong Sports, is another key donor in the rebuilding effort.

Despite their rocky history, the joint appearance was a strong message of unity for the community. Local residents, including Jessica Rogers, president of the Pacific Palisades Residents Association, expressed gratitude for the collaboration, urging both leaders to continue working together for the benefit of the neighborhood.

As the city moves forward with the rebuilding plans, both Bass and Caruso seem committed to setting aside their differences for the greater good of the community. This partnership marks a new chapter in their relationship, one that prioritizes the needs of the residents in the wake of the devastating fire.
