Turkey and Israel Engage in Discussions to Prevent Conflicts in Syria

Turkish and Israeli officials have started discussions to reduce tensions in Syria, where both countries have military forces active. This dialogue comes amid ongoing military operations, with Israel conducting hundreds of air strikes in Syria and deploying troops in the Golan Heights area.

Turkey supports the interim government in Syria and is involved in fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS). Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan confirmed that technical talks are taking place, highlighting the need for communication to avoid misunderstandings between the two nations’ military operations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that both sides agreed to keep the conversation going to maintain stability in the region. These talks, which took place in Azerbaijan, aim to create a communication channel to prevent potential clashes as both countries pursue their interests in Syria.

A Turkish source indicated that efforts are underway to establish mechanisms for cooperation, although details about the timeline and scope remain unclear. Additionally, a Turkish defense official mentioned that plans for joint training bases with Syria are in progress, emphasizing that these activities will comply with international law and not target other countries.

Israel is concerned about the new leadership in Syria and fears that Turkish military bases could pose a threat to its security. Netanyahu has labeled Turkish bases in Syria as dangerous. An Israeli political source stated that any changes in the deployment of foreign forces in Syria, particularly Turkish bases near Palmyra, would be seen as a serious violation.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israel has conducted over 500 air attacks in Syria recently, with more than 40 attacks this year alone. Syria’s government has accused Israel of trying to undermine the country’s stability.

Relations between Israel and Turkey have soured due to Israel’s recent military actions in Gaza, which have drawn sharp criticism from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He has condemned the violence, which has resulted in significant casualties among Palestinians.

As both countries continue their talks, the situation remains delicate, with each side watching the other’s moves closely.
