Federal officials attempted to enter two elementary schools in Los Angeles this week, but they were turned away by school administrators. This incident marks a significant moment amid ongoing concerns about immigration enforcement in schools.
On Monday, individuals claiming to be from a federal agency arrived at Lillian Street Elementary School and also visited Russell Elementary School, both located in the Florence-Graham neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The district confirmed these visits on Wednesday, stating that the individuals were from the Homeland Security Investigations unit, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) did not disclose the purpose of the visits or provide further details about why the officials were there. However, they emphasized the district’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all students. Following established protocols, school officials denied entry to the federal representatives, who subsequently left the premises.
In a message to parents, the district reiterated its dedication to protecting students from immigration enforcement activities. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho also expressed the district’s stance, stating, “Our schools are places of inspiration, protection, empathy, and knowledge. Fear and threat shall be met with courage and determination.”
The LAUSD has implemented policies that restrict immigration authorities from accessing school campuses without a warrant. This policy is designed to create a safe environment for all students, particularly those who may be undocumented. Other schools in the district sent out precautionary messages to their communities in light of the reported enforcement activity.
California has prepared guidelines for school districts to help them comply with state laws that limit local participation in immigration enforcement. The district has also mandated training for its employees regarding the types of assistance they should not provide to federal authorities.
This incident is part of a broader conversation about how schools handle immigration enforcement, especially as fears grow among families about potential raids or enforcement actions. The LAUSD has previously passed resolutions declaring itself a sanctuary for immigrants, reinforcing its commitment to protecting students and their families from immigration enforcement within school grounds.
