Former New Mexico Football Player Sentenced to Life in Prison for Drug Trafficking Conviction

A former football player from the University of New Mexico is facing the possibility of life in prison after being found guilty of serious federal charges. Rayshawn Boyce, 29, was convicted last year for robbing a mailman at gunpoint in 2022 and for stealing property from the post office. He was also found guilty of possessing a firearm.

The situation took a darker turn when federal prosecutors revealed that Boyce was allegedly running a methamphetamine distribution operation from inside the prison where he was sent after his robbery conviction. Surveillance footage showed a correctional officer, Gabriella Torres, smuggling meth into the facility. On May 16, 2022, she brought in a bundle of drugs hidden under her hoodie and dropped it in a cell that was not monitored by cameras for Boyce to collect later.

Boyce was caught trying to hide the drugs in the prison shower area. Officials discovered his stash, leading to further investigation into his activities behind bars. It was also reported that Torres received payments from Boyce through a Cash App for her assistance in smuggling the drugs.

Torres has since pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges and is awaiting her sentencing. Meanwhile, Boyce could face a significant prison sentence. He is looking at a maximum of ten years for the robbery case, but the drug trafficking charges could lead to a sentence ranging from ten years to life in prison.

This case highlights the ongoing issues of drug trafficking and corruption within the prison system, raising questions about security and the integrity of those who are meant to uphold the law.
