Tragic Nightclub Collapse in the Dominican Republic Claims 98 Lives

A tragic incident occurred at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, where a roof collapse during a concert left many people trapped under the debris. The Emergency Operations Centre’s director, Juan Manuel Méndez, expressed hope that some of those buried might still be alive.

The nightclub, known for hosting lively dance music events, was packed with attendees, including politicians and athletes, when the collapse happened around 1 a.m. Video footage captured moments before the disaster shows people enjoying the performance of singer Rubby Pérez, with some dancing and others seated at tables. A recording taken just before the collapse reveals a man near the stage pointing to the ceiling, suggesting something had fallen. Moments later, chaos ensued as the video goes dark, and a woman can be heard crying out for her father.

Among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province and sister of former baseball star Nelson Cruz. The loss has been felt deeply, with President Luis Abinader offering condolences to the families affected by this heartbreaking event.

One of Rubby Pérez’s band members described the scene as chaotic, initially thinking it was an earthquake. The singer’s daughter confirmed that her father was among those trapped, adding to the emotional weight of the situation.

As rescue efforts continue, the community holds its breath, hoping for positive news about those still unaccounted for.
