Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has appointed Robert Clark as the new deputy mayor for public safety. This decision comes after a significant scandal involving Clark’s predecessor, Brian K. Williams, who was placed on administrative leave due to allegations of making a bomb threat against City Hall.
Clark, a former FBI official, officially began his role on Monday. He will oversee police and fire issues in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Police Department identified Williams as a likely suspect in the bomb threat, prompting the FBI to take over the investigation because of the department’s close ties with him. Williams has maintained his innocence, and no charges have been filed against him yet. He is still on the city payroll but is reportedly planning to retire.
In his new position, Clark will also help the city recover from the recent Palisades fire. His appointment comes at a time when Mayor Bass has reported a decrease in homicides and shootings in the city. Clark has a strong background in law enforcement, having led anti-gang efforts during his time with the FBI.
Clark’s personal story is compelling. He grew up in foster care in a tough environment filled with violence and crime. His father was murdered when he was just 12 years old. Clark has expressed a desire to give back to the community, stating that he sees himself as part of the community he serves.
After leaving the FBI in 2016, Clark worked as a law enforcement consultant and served as the director of public safety for the city of Columbus, Ohio. He also appeared on the CBS reality show “Hunted,” where he led a team in a manhunt.
As Clark steps into this pivotal role, many eyes will be on him to see how he addresses the ongoing challenges in public safety in Los Angeles.
