Trumps Most Disliked Judge Has Powerful Allies

James Boasberg and Brett Kavanaugh share a long history that dates back to their time at Yale Law School. They were not just classmates; they were also housemates in an off-campus townhouse. Their friendship has endured through the years, built on shared experiences and backgrounds. Both are sons of lawyers and attended prestigious high schools in Washington, D.C. Kavanaugh went to Georgetown Preparatory, while Boasberg attended St. Albans. They both graduated from Yale as undergraduates before going on to law school there.

Their paths to the federal bench were similar as well. Both were appointed by President George W. Bush, and they worked together for over seven years at the E. Barrett Prettyman U.S. Courthouse in Washington, D.C. According to their classmates, they have maintained a close bond throughout their careers. Amy Jeffress, a former law school classmate, noted that they have always shared a lot in common.

Judge Boasberg, known as Jeb, is regarded as a moderate judge. He is recognized for his calm demeanor and thoughtful decisions. He has strong connections within the conservative legal community, including with Kavanaugh.

However, their relationship has faced challenges in recent times. In 2018, Kavanaugh was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Trump. Recently, Trump criticized Boasberg after the judge issued a ruling that temporarily halted the administration’s use of the Alien Enemies Act. This law was being used to deport individuals accused of being Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador. Trump labeled Boasberg as a “Radical Left Lunatic” and called for his removal from the bench.

This situation highlights the tension between the Trump administration and some federal judges, particularly those who make rulings that oppose the administration’s policies. As Boasberg continues to serve on the bench, his friendship with Kavanaugh remains a notable aspect of their intertwined careers in the legal system.
