The new Minecraft movie has made a surprising splash at the box office, with around half of its global earnings coming from North America. This success comes despite the film receiving mixed to poor reviews from critics. The Telegraph rated it just two stars, criticizing it for lacking the charm of the beloved video game. The Guardian was even harsher, giving it only one star and describing it as feeling cobbled together.
However, families have flocked to theaters to see it. Steve Buck, the chief strategy officer at EntTelligence, noted that the film exceeded all industry expectations, especially with a surge in ticket sales later on. He pointed out that it appealed to a wide audience, with about a quarter of viewers being under 13 years old and over half being male. Buck mentioned that when dads enjoy a family film, it’s a good sign for its popularity.
The film has achieved the largest domestic opening of 2025 and is the biggest for Warner Bros since 2023. Minecraft, known as one of the best-selling video games with over 300 million copies sold, tells the story of four misfits who are pulled through a portal into the Overworld, the starting point for all Minecraft players.
While many video game adaptations have struggled at the box office, some, like Sonic and The Super Mario Bros Movie, have found great success. In comments before the movie’s release, actor Jack Black acknowledged the pressure to please fans, highlighting how significant this film is for a generation that has loved the game for years.
