Two varieties of Texas Pete hot sauces are being recalled across ten states due to labeling and bottling issues, according to the T.W. Garner Food Company. The recall affects the Texas Pete Habanero Buffalo Sauce and the Texas Pete Sweet CHAbanero Sauce, which were distributed to stores and distribution centers in states including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Virginia, and Vermont.
The company announced the recall on Thursday, revealing that some bottles of the Habanero Buffalo Sauce may actually contain sriracha pepper sauce. This is concerning because the sriracha sauce has sulfites, which are not mentioned on the Habanero Buffalo label. People who are allergic or sensitive to sulfites could face serious health risks if they consume these products.
The company stated that no illnesses have been reported so far. However, the recall was initiated after inspectors found the discrepancies during routine quality checks. In addition to the Habanero Buffalo Sauce, certain lots of the Sweet CHAbanero Sauce are also being recalled because they do not contain the labeled ingredient of aged peppers.
Consumers who have purchased these sauces are advised to either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. The best-by dates for the affected products can be found on the bottles, ensuring that customers can easily identify which items are involved in the recall.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has included the recall notice on its website, emphasizing the importance of proper labeling, especially regarding allergens. The presence of sulfites must be clearly stated on food labels, as required by law. For any further questions, consumers can contact T.W. Garner Food Company directly.
