A 24-year-old YouTube influencer from Arizona has been arrested for attempting to make contact with an isolated indigenous tribe in India. Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, known online as Neo-Orientalist, traveled to North Sentinel Island, a restricted area in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where access is strictly prohibited to protect the native Sentinelese people.
Polyakov reportedly visited the island on April 4, during his third attempt to reach the secluded location. He brought offerings, including a coconut and a can of Diet Coke, which he intended to present to the Sentinelese. Local police stated that he was motivated by a passion for adventure and extreme challenges. Upon reaching the shore, he spent about five minutes collecting samples and filming with a GoPro camera.
Despite his brief stay, he did not make contact with any tribe members. Afterward, he remained in a boat offshore for about an hour. Local fishermen spotted him and alerted authorities, leading to his arrest.
The incident has raised concerns, especially given the tragic history of contact attempts with the Sentinelese. In 2018, an American missionary was killed while trying to reach out to the tribe. Caroline Pearce, director of Survival International, criticized Polyakov’s actions as "deeply disturbing," highlighting the importance of respecting the tribe’s desire for isolation.
Polyakov is currently in judicial custody and is expected to appear in court on April 17. Authorities are investigating his activities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, including questioning hotel staff about his stay in Port Blair. The situation has sparked discussions about the protection of indigenous peoples and their lands from outside influences.
