Hermosa Beach Police Chief Paul LeBaron described the content of these videos as "offensive and frankly disgusting." The man appeared to be trying to provoke reactions from passersby, but when officers arrived, he had already left, and no one identified themselves as a victim.
Despite the community’s frustration, Chief LeBaron emphasized that the man’s speech, even if vulgar, is protected under the Constitution. On Thursday morning, the man had another run-in with Redondo Beach police before being taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Mental health holds can be extended depending on the circumstances, and if he returns to Hermosa Beach, officers are prepared to intervene again.
