Tricia Helfer, known for her role as a humanoid Cylon in "Battlestar Galactica," recently shared her thoughts on the show’s warnings about artificial intelligence (AI), stating that they feel more relevant today than ever. Speaking at the Beverly Hills Film Festival, Helfer reflected on the show, which first aired over 20 years ago, and expressed concern about the potential dangers of AI.
Helfer remarked, "We did warn against AI while we were shooting it. It was 20 years ago, and I’ve recently re-watched it and went, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s even more relevant now.’" She emphasized the need for caution, describing the relationship between humans and AI as a "slippery slope." Helfer noted that while we can use AI to our benefit, there’s a risk it could gain control over us.
The actress, who portrayed Number Six, a key character in the series, acknowledged that while humanoid robots are not yet a reality, advancements in technology suggest they could be on the horizon. She stated, "I think we’re a little bit far off from the humanoid Cylons yet and humanoid robots, but I don’t know, they’re coming."
Helfer also highlighted the importance of regulations surrounding AI. She believes that as technology evolves, society must ensure it is handled responsibly. "It’s not going away, so I think it’s something that we’re going to have to embrace," she said. "But we need to have regulations and an understanding of how quickly and how overwhelming this technology could become."
"Battlestar Galactica," which aired from 2004 to 2009, tells the story of humanity’s struggle against the Cylons, robots created by humans that ultimately turn against them. The show has been praised for its commentary on technology and its implications for society.
Helfer’s remarks come at a time when discussions about AI are increasingly prominent in public discourse, particularly as new developments continue to emerge. As the world becomes more aware of AI’s capabilities and risks, the themes presented in "Battlestar Galactica" seem to resonate even more strongly with audiences today.
In related news, a reboot of the series was in development at Peacock but has since been put on hold. This new version was expected to explore modern themes of AI and technology, reflecting current societal concerns. The original series remains a significant cultural reference point for discussions about the future of technology and its impact on humanity.
