Homeless Man Killed in Venice Beach After Allegedly Stepping in During Couples Dispute

A homeless man was fatally shot in Venice Beach on Wednesday night while trying to intervene in an argument between a couple. The incident took place around 10:20 p.m. near the Westminster Dog Park, prompting a swift response from the Los Angeles Police Department.

The victim, identified as 28-year-old Zackery Melton, was well-known in the area. According to a woman at the park, who identified herself as Melton’s girlfriend, he stepped in to help when he saw the couple arguing. "He was such a protector," she said, recalling how he was shot while defending someone.

Witnesses reported that after the shooting, the gunman fled into a nearby building. Police surrounded the area and searched for the shooter, but he was not located. Authorities are still looking for the individual responsible for the shooting.

Since the tragic event, a makeshift memorial has appeared at the park, with flowers placed where Melton was shot. Local residents expressed their sorrow, hoping to remember him for more than just this incident. One regular park visitor noted that many people overlook the humanity of those experiencing homelessness.

The LAPD continues to investigate the shooting and is urging anyone with information to come forward.
