9-Year-Old Passes Away Hours After Dental Surgery; Cause of Death Being Investigated

A 9-year-old girl from San Diego tragically died just hours after having dental surgery at Dreamtime Dentistry. The girl, named Silvanna Moreno, was placed under anesthesia for the procedure on March 18. Later that day, she was found unresponsive at home, prompting her family to call for help.

Silvanna’s dental surgery was intended to address her acute anxiety about dental visits, according to a statement from the dental office. After the surgery, she was discharged in what was reported as stable condition, with her mother taking her home. However, during the car ride, Silvanna fell asleep and remained asleep upon arriving home. Her family checked on her throughout the day but eventually called 911 when they discovered she was unresponsive.

Paramedics transported Silvanna to Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, where medical staff attempted lifesaving measures but were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The San Diego Police Department’s child abuse unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death, as is standard protocol for cases involving minors. The investigation is particularly focused on the anesthesiologist who administered sedation during the procedure. Dr. Ryan Watkins, the dentist in charge, has a history of disciplinary action. In 2020, he was placed on probation for 35 months after a previous incident where a patient experienced cardiac arrest during surgery.

Dreamtime Dentistry expressed deep sadness over Silvanna’s passing, stating that they followed standard post-anesthesia protocols and that the girl was stable when discharged. The dental office emphasized that Silvanna was referred to them specifically for treatment under general anesthesia due to her age and anxiety.

Silvanna is remembered fondly by her family and community. A GoFundMe page created to help with funeral expenses described her as a bright and loving child, known for her big smile and warm hugs. She leaves behind her parents and three siblings.
