Friends of Big Bear Valley recently announced the names of the two newest bald eagles in the area: Sunny and Gizmo. These eaglets hatched in early March and are the offspring of the well-known bald eagle pair, Jackie and Shadow.
The names were revealed on a Facebook post after a naming contest that attracted over 54,000 entries. The contest was narrowed down to 30 names, from which students at Bear Elementary School voted for their favorites. The nonprofit organization shared the exciting news, stating, "Meet Sunny and Gizmo." They explained that the larger eaglet is named Sunny, while the smaller one is called Gizmo.
Sadly, there was a third eaglet that hatched alongside Sunny and Gizmo, but it did not survive a snowstorm last month. This eaglet was named Misty in honor of Kathi Misterly, a dedicated volunteer who passed away from cancer.
The winners of the naming contest will be contacted soon and will receive a certificate of recognition. Multiple individuals submitted the winning names, making it a shared victory for many. The excitement surrounding these eaglets has captivated the local community, showcasing the interest in wildlife and conservation efforts in the area.
