President Trump Hails Wisconsin Voter ID Amendment as a Major Victory for Republicans

President Donald Trump recently celebrated a significant win for voter ID laws in Wisconsin. On Tuesday, an amendment was passed that will add voter ID requirements to the state constitution. Trump took to Truth Social to express his enthusiasm, stating, "VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT." He called it a "BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS" and suggested it would help secure future victories in Wisconsin.

The amendment, known as Question 1, requires voters to present valid photographic identification to vote in any election. It passed with overwhelming support, with about 62.6% of voters in favor, according to early results reported by the New York Times.

Wisconsin previously implemented a voter ID requirement in 2011, which faced legal challenges but eventually went into effect. By enshrining this law in the state constitution, it becomes more challenging for lawmakers or courts to repeal it.

Democrats across the country have criticized voter ID laws, claiming they disproportionately affect minority voters. However, many polls indicate that a majority of Americans support measures to enhance election integrity.

This amendment’s passage comes despite the defeat of Trump-backed Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel, who lost to Democrat-aligned Judge Susan Crawford. Crawford has previously criticized the state’s voter ID law, labeling it as "draconian."

Trump won Wisconsin in the 2024 presidential election, marking only the second time a Republican candidate has taken the state in nearly 40 years. He had also won in 2016, both times with narrow margins. His increasing vote totals in each election reflect a growing Republican presence in this key swing state.
