Barcelona Dominates Girona to Reclaim LaLiga Lead Over Real Madrid

Barcelona delivered an impressive performance on Sunday, defeating Girona 4-1 in the Catalan derby. The match took place at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, where Robert Lewandowski shone with two goals in the second half, helping his team secure a vital win that keeps them three points ahead of Real Madrid at the top of LaLiga.

With this victory, Barcelona now has 66 points after 29 matches. Lewandowski, at 36 years old, continues to lead the LaLiga scoring chart with 25 goals, three ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe. After the game, Lewandowski expressed his determination to continue playing at a high level, stating, “I’m feeling great physically, and if you look at the numbers, they’re the same as they’ve always been.”

The match started with Barcelona dominating possession and creating chances. Early on, Fermin Lopez and Lewandowski tested Girona’s goalkeeper, Paulo Gazzaniga. Barcelona had a goal disallowed for offside and faced a controversial moment when a potential penalty was overturned by VAR, resulting in a free kick for Girona instead.

Just before halftime, Barcelona broke the deadlock with an own goal from Girona’s Ladislav Krejci, who deflected a free kick from Yamal. However, Girona responded quickly after the break. Dutch forward Arnaut Danjuma scored with a well-placed shot, leveling the score at 1-1.

Barcelona remained calm and regained their lead shortly after the hour mark. Lewandowski converted a header from Lopez, showcasing his acrobatic skills to make it 2-1. He added another goal in the 77th minute, finishing a counterattack with a precise low shot past Gazzaniga.

Substitute Ferran Torres capped off the scoring for Barcelona, expertly controlling a pass before finding the bottom corner to make it 4-1. Yamal nearly added a fifth, but his curling shot hit the crossbar.

Girona’s Danjuma reflected on the match, acknowledging the challenge of facing a strong Barcelona team. He noted that after scoring their equalizer, Girona hoped to apply more pressure, but Barcelona quickly regained control.

This victory solidifies Barcelona’s position in the league and highlights Lewandowski’s continued impact on the field, proving that age is just a number for the experienced striker.
