Richard Chamberlain, the beloved star known for his role in the classic TV series “Dr. Kildare,” has passed away at the age of 90. He died on Saturday night in Waimanalo, Hawaii, due to complications from a stroke, as confirmed by his publicist, Harlan Boll.
Chamberlain’s partner, Martin Rabbett, shared a heartfelt statement, saying, “Our beloved Richard is with the angels now. He is free and soaring to those loved ones before us.” He expressed gratitude for having known such a loving person.
Born George Richard Chamberlain on March 31, 1934, in Beverly Hills, Chamberlain first captured the hearts of viewers as the compassionate doctor in “Dr. Kildare,” which aired from 1961 to 1966. His charming looks and warm demeanor made him a favorite among teenage fans, earning him the title of most popular male star in Photoplay magazine for three consecutive years.
In addition to his early fame, Chamberlain became known as the “king of the miniseries.” His breakthrough role came in 1978 with “Centennial,” and he solidified his status with the 1983 hit “The Thorn Birds,” which drew an astounding 100 million viewers. He won Golden Globes for his performances in both “Shogun” and “The Thorn Birds,” along with an earlier award for “Dr. Kildare.”
Chamberlain later transitioned to theater, showcasing his singing talent in productions like “My Fair Lady” and “The Sound of Music.” He also reprised his role in “The Thorn Birds” in a 1996 TV movie.
Despite his success, Chamberlain faced challenges in his personal life. He did not publicly come out as gay until 2003, revealing this in his autobiography, “Shattered Love.” He described the struggle of hiding his sexuality in a time when it was not accepted, expressing relief at finally being open about who he was.
Chamberlain’s career spanned decades, during which he appeared in films such as “The Music Lovers” and “The Towering Inferno.” He continued to act in various television shows well into the 21st century, including guest roles in “Will & Grace” and “Touched by an Angel.”
His journey from a young actor to a television icon and his openness about his personal struggles have left a lasting impact on both fans and the industry. Chamberlain will be remembered not only for his talent but also for his courage in living his truth.
