A federal judge in Massachusetts has stepped in to halt the deportation of a Turkish doctoral student from Tufts University. Rumeysa Ozturk, 30, was detained by immigration officials after expressing support for Palestinians during the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Ozturk was taken into custody by federal agents near her home in Massachusetts. Following her arrest, immigration officials revoked her visa, prompting concerns about her legal status in the U.S. On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Denise Casper ruled that Ozturk cannot be removed from the country while the court considers her case. The judge has given the government until Tuesday evening to respond to a complaint from Ozturk’s legal team.
This incident comes a year after Ozturk co-wrote an opinion piece for Tufts’ student newspaper. In that piece, she criticized the university’s response to student calls for divesting from companies linked to Israel and referred to the situation in Palestine as a genocide. Friends of Ozturk have noted that she was not heavily involved in protests against Israel, suggesting her detention is tied more to her expressed views than her actions.
Following her arrest, a lawyer filed a lawsuit seeking her release. The American Civil Liberties Union has since joined her legal team, arguing that her detention infringes on her rights to free speech and due process.
On the diplomatic front, Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively working to secure Ozturk’s release. A spokesperson confirmed that Turkish officials are providing legal and consular support and have visited her in detention.
The backdrop to this situation includes the Trump administration’s stance on pro-Palestinian protests. President Trump has vowed to deport foreign protesters who support Palestine, linking them to Hamas and accusing them of anti-Semitism. Critics argue that the administration is mischaracterizing legitimate criticism of Israel as support for terrorism.
This case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding immigration, freedom of speech, and the complexities of U.S. foreign policy regarding Israel and Palestine. As the legal proceedings continue, many are watching closely to see how this situation unfolds.
