Oxnard Brothers Accused of Targeting Youths for Sales of Magic Mushrooms and Marijuana, Authorities Report

Two brothers from Ventura County were arrested this week for allegedly selling drugs to local youths, including a case that sent at least one teenager to the hospital. The brothers, 18-year-old Enrique and 26-year-old Erick Benitez, are facing multiple drug-related charges after detectives linked them to the hospitalization of a juvenile who had taken psychedelic mushrooms.

According to Ventura County sheriff’s Detective Jonathan Schnereger, the brothers operated a drug delivery service, using social media and messaging apps to reach their customers. The investigation began after the hospitalized juvenile informed detectives that they had purchased magic mushrooms from the Benitez brothers.

During a search of the brothers’ residence, authorities discovered around 20 grams of psilocybin mushrooms, 88 marijuana vape pens, 10 nicotine vape pens, and a significant amount of loose marijuana. They also found over $2,000 in cash and a loaded handgun without a serial number, commonly referred to as a ghost gun.

The brothers face serious charges, including selling a controlled substance to a minor, possession of a controlled substance while armed, and child endangerment. Their bail has been set at $250,000 each.

This incident highlights a growing concern about the accessibility of illegal drugs to minors, especially through online platforms. The authorities are urging parents to talk to their children about the dangers of drug use and the risks involved with purchasing substances from unknown sources.
