The incident that led to the trial occurred in October 2021 when a gun held by Alec Baldwin discharged, resulting in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in New Mexico. The film’s first trailer has now been released since that tragic event.
"Rust" is set in 1880s Wyoming and stars Baldwin as Harland Rust, a notorious outlaw. The plot follows a young orphan named Lucas McCalister, who accidentally kills a rancher and faces the death penalty. Harland Rust, played by Baldwin, is the orphan’s estranged grandfather who helps him escape from jail, leading them on a dangerous journey to Mexico.
As they flee, they must evade a determined U.S. Marshal named Wood Helm and a ruthless bounty hunter known as "Preacher." The film is scheduled for release in theaters on May 2.
Following the incident, Baldwin maintained that he did not pull the trigger of the gun. He expressed his grief and confusion during interviews, recalling the moment the gun went off unexpectedly. The film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
In a significant development, a judge dismissed Baldwin’s involuntary manslaughter case, meaning he cannot be charged again for this incident. The judge criticized the state’s handling of the case, suggesting there were serious flaws in the prosecution’s conduct.
