Kenneth R. Cooper, a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, described the situation as akin to a bomb. Firefighters soaked hay in diesel fuel and set fire to the debris, resulting in a controlled burn that produced a spectacular display of sparks. Thankfully, no neighboring properties were damaged during this operation.
Residents in the area were evacuated as a precaution. Guadalupe Aguilera, a local resident, expressed gratitude for how authorities managed the situation, noting her initial fear but ultimately feeling reassured by the response. She described the moment of the explosion, saying it felt like the house was rocked and dropped.
Multiple agencies, including the LAPD’s bomb squad and the FBI, collaborated to ensure the safety of the operation. The Environmental Protection Agency monitored air quality, and utility companies shut off gas lines to prevent further risks.
By the end of the operation, the site was secured with plywood barriers, shielding it from view.
