Survey: Almost 50% of California Voters Open to Supporting Republican Governor

Nearly half of California’s likely voters are open to supporting a Republican candidate for governor in the upcoming 2026 election, according to a recent poll. Conducted from March 6 to March 9, the survey found that 48 percent of respondents said they would consider voting for a Republican, as reported by 790 KABC radio.

The poll, carried out by national pollster David Wolfson, highlights a significant interest in Republican leadership as the state approaches the gubernatorial election. In addition to the Republican consideration, the poll revealed that many voters are concerned about various pressing issues in California. For instance, a staggering 83 percent of those surveyed believe that gas prices are too high.

Other notable findings from the poll include:

  • 73 percent of voters support fully funding anti-crime measures outlined in Proposition 36, which state Democratic leaders have not implemented.
  • 72 percent feel that homelessness remains a significant problem, despite years of Democratic governance in Sacramento.
  • 71 percent believe that Democrats have failed to address the high cost of living in the state.
  • 69 percent think that more should be done to lower energy and utility costs.
  • 62 percent support a full independent investigation into recent wildfires in Los Angeles.
  • Only 24 percent of Californians think that biological males who identify as transgender should compete in female sports.

In the Democratic camp, former Vice President Kamala Harris is currently seen as the leading candidate. A separate survey from Emerson College Polling indicated that 57 percent of Democratic primary voters would back her in a run for governor.

Additionally, former Congresswoman Katie Porter has announced her candidacy for governor, emphasizing the need for "hope and grit" in California’s future.

As the political landscape shifts, these poll results suggest that voters are looking for change and are considering alternatives to the current Democratic leadership in California. The 2026 gubernatorial race is shaping up to be a pivotal moment for the state, with key issues like gas prices, crime, and homelessness at the forefront of voters’ minds.
