A home in Pacoima exploded on Thursday, injuring one man and forcing dozens of families to evacuate. Authorities were alerted to the explosion around 9:01 a.m. in the 13000 block of West Remington Street. When firefighters arrived, they found light smoke coming from the partially collapsed structure.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) confirmed that explosive materials were found inside the damaged home. Officer Drake Madison stated that some of the materials included black powder, commonly used in illegal homemade fireworks. The LAPD bomb squad is currently working to identify and secure all potentially dangerous materials in the area.
A 24-year-old man was inside the house during the explosion. He suffered severe burns and other injuries and was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Four dogs were also in the home at the time. Firefighters managed to rescue three of them, while the fourth was trapped but later freed by the crew.
The explosion has left about 60 households displaced. The American Red Cross set up an evacuation shelter at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, providing food, showers, and beds for those affected. Red Cross representatives assured that they would continue to assist residents until evacuation orders are lifted.
LAPD and city officials are collaborating to ensure the safety of the community. Councilmember Monica Rodriguez expressed concern over the situation, emphasizing the risks posed by the illegal activities of the home’s resident. Mayor Karen Bass announced plans for a controlled burn at the site to safely dispose of hazardous materials.
As investigations continue, authorities are working carefully to manage the situation. They are grateful for the community’s patience during this time. The incident is part of a larger investigation involving both state and federal agencies, highlighting the seriousness of the matter.
