A 9-year-old girl from San Diego died just hours after undergoing dental surgery at Dreamtime Dentistry. The tragic incident has drawn the attention of local authorities, who are now investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Silvanna Moreno was placed under anesthesia for a dental procedure on March 18. After the surgery, the dental office reported that she was discharged in stable condition, alert, and with normal vital signs. She was sent home with her mother following standard post-anesthesia protocols.
However, after arriving home, Silvanna fell asleep during the car ride. Once home, her family transitioned her to bed, where she remained asleep. Throughout the day, her family checked on her. When they found her unresponsive later, they called 911. Paramedics attempted lifesaving measures while transporting her to Rady Children’s Hospital, but unfortunately, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The San Diego Police Department’s child abuse unit is investigating the case since it involves a minor. This unit typically looks into deaths of individuals aged 17 or younger.
The dentist who performed the procedure, Dr. Ryan Watkins, has a history of disciplinary action. He was previously placed on probation after a 2016 incident where he was accused of administering excessive anesthesia to a patient, resulting in a brief cardiac arrest. Despite this, he has over 20 years of experience in anesthesiology and is the owner of Dreamtime Dentistry.
In a statement, Dreamtime Dentistry expressed deep sadness over the loss of Silvanna, describing her as a young patient who was referred for treatment due to her age and anxiety about dental procedures. The facility emphasized that no complications were noted during her surgery.
Silvanna’s family has set up a verified GoFundMe account to help cover funeral expenses. They remember her as a bright and cheerful third-grader who lit up every room with her smile and hugs.
