Dutch police have identified a 30-year-old Ukrainian man as the suspect in a mass stabbing incident that occurred in Amsterdam. The attack took place near Dam Square on Thursday, leaving five victims injured. The suspect, named Roman D., hails from the conflict-ridden Donetsk region in Ukraine.
According to reports, Roman D. is accused of using a knife to assault a diverse group of individuals, including a Dutch woman, a Belgian woman, a Polish man, and two Americans, aged 67 and 69. Initial assessments suggest that the victims were selected at random, but detectives are still investigating the motives behind the attack.
The situation escalated when the suspect attempted to flee the scene. A young English tourist intervened, successfully detaining Roman D. until the police arrived. During the incident, the suspect sustained injuries to his leg and is currently being held in a prison hospital in Scheveningen.
The police faced challenges in identifying Roman D. as he was found with multiple fake identity documents and refused to share his real name. His background as a Ukrainian national from a war-torn area has raised concerns among the public. Dutch populist leader Geert Wilders responded to the news by expressing frustration over the implications of a Ukrainian migrant being involved in such violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the attack and the suspect’s motivations. As the investigation unfolds, the community remains shaken by the events that transpired in the heart of Amsterdam.
