Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged 19 individuals with conspiracy to murder a rapper after a conflict involving the Mexican Mafia. The rapper, Nelson Abrego, known as Swifty Blue, reportedly angered a member of this notorious gang, prompting the alleged plot against him.
The charges stem from a complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, which outlines a wide-ranging conspiracy that involved communication through TikTok and recorded jail calls. Accused Mexican Mafia member Manuel “Snuffy” Quintero is said to have ordered the hit on Abrego in 2022. Quintero, aged 49, was arrested recently and has a criminal history that includes assault and drug-related offenses.
The plot was reportedly orchestrated from various locations, including Kern County prisons and jails in downtown Los Angeles. On New Year’s Eve 2022, Quintero’s subordinate, Giuseppe “Clever” Leyva, informed an informant that gang members were instructed to attack Abrego “on sight.” Leyva, who is currently in custody for unrelated federal charges, expressed disdain for the rapper, stating, “F— him.”
While the exact reason for Quintero’s anger remains unclear, it has been suggested that Abrego’s music, which resonates with themes of gang life, may have contributed to tensions. In a previous interview, Abrego indicated that his music reflects a desire for toughness that many people share.
In November 2023, Abrego was jailed on a gun possession charge. While incarcerated, communication among gang members continued, with threats made against him. One inmate, Onesimo “Vamps” Gonzalez, even told his mother to check if “the one who sings” was “still good,” indicating concern for Abrego’s safety.
The situation escalated when a group of inmates allegedly attacked Abrego in his cell, but he survived the assault. Following this, Leyva communicated via TikTok that Abrego’s career was “done,” and further threats were made against him, including vandalism of his family home.
The conspiracy has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of multiple gang members and the use of modern communication methods to coordinate violent acts. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to apprehend those still at large, including Leyva’s accomplices.
This case highlights the ongoing issues of gang violence in Los Angeles and the dangers faced by individuals involved in the music scene, particularly those who touch on themes related to gang culture.
