16-Year-Old Missouri Firefighter Dies in the Line of Duty

A tragic incident has struck the Beaufort community in Missouri, where a 16-year-old firefighter lost his life while responding to a call for help. Chevy Gall, a dedicated member of the all-volunteer Beaufort-Leslie Fire Protection District, was involved in a serious car accident on Saturday afternoon.

The accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. as Gall was driving to a reported water rescue. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, his vehicle crossed the center line on Highway 50 and collided with a cargo van. Gall suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Mercy Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The driver of the van, a 30-year-old man, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. At the time of the crash, the area was experiencing heavy rainfall, which may have contributed to the accident. Franklin County Emergency Management Agency Director Abe Cook noted that the crash happened after several flash flood warnings had been issued the previous day, although water levels had receded significantly by the time of the incident.

Fire Chief Terry Feth expressed deep sorrow over Gall’s passing, stating, "Tonight is a fire chief’s worst nightmare. We are heartbroken by the loss of one of our own." He emphasized that Gall died while answering the call to help others, and the entire fire department is mourning alongside Gall’s family and friends.

The Chief Mason Griffith Foundation shared the news of Gall’s death on social media, highlighting the profound impact of his loss on his family, who were already grieving the recent deaths of other relatives in a separate accident.

In a show of respect, an American flag was raised over the I-270 overpass during a dignified transfer ceremony for Gall, as emergency vehicles from multiple agencies lined the route. The community is coming together to support Gall’s family during this difficult time, and donations are being requested to assist them.

This heartbreaking event serves as a reminder of the sacrifices first responders make every day. The Beaufort area, with a population of less than 2,000, is now united in grief over the loss of a young hero who dedicated his life to serving others.
